A Dog's Life - The Maggie Story

Chapter 3 - Another trip to the vet [Chapter 2] [Chapter 4]

Overall my life was pretty good to this point.  I was getting a couple meals a day, I got plenty of sleep and this kennel thing was pretty cool.  It was my little place that I could be alone with my thoughts.  Ok, so there weren’t a lot of those at this point, but I tried!

Day 4

Day four started out much as the rest of the day had.  My parents got dressed, fed me and put me in my kennel for the day.  However today was just a bit different.  My parents came home early and they were busily running around the house.  They were ignoring me!!  I barked and raised a fuss, but my parents seem to have forgotten about me.

It was about this time my dad came into my room and grabbed the small kennel and left the house with it.  Was I getting a new brother or sister?  Was he putting in the car and taking me back to my original family?  What’s up with that?

I overheard a conversation between mom and dad.  Apparently I was going someplace called the veterinarian.  Now I’m not that sure what that is, but I guess it means another ride in the car.  That’s ok I guess.

The ride in the car was uneventful, but long.  It seemed to take hours and hours, but I really don’t know how long it took.  Anyway, we arrived at the vet’s office.  Dad came and got me out of the kennel and mom took me from him and carried me inside.

The nice lady in there greeted us and even gave me a treat!  Heck, she even knew my name.  I’m so popular!   I think I’m going to like this place.  There were other dogs there with their parents.  Most of them wanted to sniff me and one even wanted to play, but mom wouldn’t let me.

One by one the other dogs got called into the office until finally it was our turn.  Mom picked me up and we went through the door to meet the veterinarian.   It was at this point I realized what a vet was.  I even vaguely remember being in this place earlier in life.  I think I was with my brothers and sisters at that point, but I don’t know for sure.  I do remember my doggie mom being really upset when they took us away from her.  Anyway, back to the story.

Mom put me up on this big metal table.  Let me tell you, this table was cold and slippery.  If I sat down, I didn’t slide, but it was really cold on my hairless little butt.  If I stood up, my feet slid out from under me.  This does not make for a happy puppy.  In fact, in my mind, I would be safer being on the floor, so I made a break for it.   Rats, mom is too quick!

The vet poked at me and felt all over.  Then once again out came the needles!  I guess my butt was going to be sore for just a bit longer.

The upside to the whole thing was the treat that he gave me when I was done getting shot.  I guess as long as there’s food life isn’t so bad.
